The Aging Eye, by Sandra Gordon

Book Review by Dr. Fred Raleigh

You might be interested in this wonderful book that was recently released by the Harvard Medical School.

The book is broken down into 9 chapters. The first chapter beings with how your eye works and then the next few chapters move on to discuss changes that occur in our eyes as we age and eye care basics. After this the chapters move into various conditions that impact the aging eye. Included in the chapters is information on how to protect your eyes and safeguarding your sight.

There are also two appendices that have nice tables on medications used to treat glaucoma and dry eye syndrome. Near the end of the book is an excellent glossary that defines terms used through out the booklet. The glossary is followed by a well thought out list of national resources available for people with various conditions effecting the eye(s) and lastly, there is an easy to use index.

I found the chapters are easy to understand and flow well in most places. Where appropriate the author has included well defined pictures that help to support the chapter's narrative. I personally found the little sections in each chapter called "Eye Openers" very useful.

These "Eye Openers" helped to either clarify points being made in the chapter or to let you know what is developing with regard to the particular chapter's topic. Each chapter concludes with a short summary of what points you should be taking home.

The book can be purchased for approximately $13 at your local book store. I found the book at Amazon.com for just over $10.
